Why Does My Drain Keep Blocking? 7 Signs It’s More Than Just a Blockage
A blocked drain is annoying enough once. But when the same drain keeps blocking, clearing it and hoping for the best probably isn’t going to solve the problem.
If you’re constantly reaching for the plunger, dealing with slow drainage or finding yourself calling a plumber every few months, there could be something happening further down the line.
At Keller Plumbing and Drainage, blocked drains are one of our favourite problems to solve. We use professional CCTV drain inspection equipment to look inside your pipework, identify what’s actually causing the issue and recommend the right solution.
Here are seven signs your recurring blockage could be pointing to a bigger problem.
1. The Same Drain Keeps Blocking
One blockage might simply be a build-up of hair, grease or debris.
But if the same drain keeps blocking again and again, there’s a good chance there’s an underlying issue that needs to be investigated.
Repeated blockages can be caused by damaged pipes, tree roots, build-up within the pipe or poor drainage.
Clearing the blockage gets things moving again — but finding out why it keeps happening is the important part.
2. Multiple Drains Are Slow
If your kitchen sink is slow, the shower is taking forever to drain and your bathroom basin is suddenly struggling too, it may not be a coincidence.
Multiple slow drains can indicate an issue within the main drainage system rather than an individual fixture.
This is one of those situations where it’s better to investigate early rather than wait until everything stops flowing.
3. You Can Hear Gurgling
That strange gurgling sound coming from your drain or toilet isn't something to ignore.
Gurgling can indicate trapped air within the drainage system, which can happen when water isn't flowing freely through the pipes.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're about to have a plumbing disaster — but it's certainly worth getting checked.
4. There’s a Bad Smell Coming From the Drain
A persistent unpleasant smell from a drain can be a sign of organic matter, grease or other debris building up within the pipe.
If cleaning the drain doesn't get rid of the smell, there may be a deeper drainage issue that needs attention.
5. Your Toilet Is Backing Up
Nobody wants to see water heading in the wrong direction.
If your toilet is regularly slow to drain, bubbling or backing up, it could indicate a blockage further along your drainage system.
A recurring toilet blockage should be investigated rather than repeatedly cleared.
6. You’ve Got Trees Near Your Plumbing
Beautiful gardens and healthy trees are great — until their roots find their way into your pipes.
Tree roots are naturally attracted to moisture and can enter small cracks or damaged sections of underground pipework. Once they're inside, they can grow and create increasingly serious blockages.
If your property has established trees and recurring drainage problems, it's worth having the pipework inspected.
7. Your Blockage Keeps Coming Back
This is the biggest one.
If you've had your drain cleared and the problem returns weeks or months later, your plumbing may be telling you something.
A recurring blockage can be a symptom of a damaged, collapsed, misaligned or compromised pipe.
That's where a CCTV drain inspection can make a big difference.
So, What Does a CCTV Drain Inspection Actually Do?
Instead of guessing what's happening underground, a CCTV drain camera allows us to inspect the inside of the pipework and identify what's causing the problem.
It can help locate issues such as:
Tree root intrusion
Cracked or damaged pipes
Heavy build-up
Foreign objects
Pipe deterioration
Recurring blockages
Collapsed or compromised sections of pipe
The result is a much clearer picture of what's happening — and a more informed approach to fixing it.
